The PADI IE
The IE is broken into 4 sections:
- Written exams: There are 5 exams covering dive theory. Each exam contains 12 multiple choice questions. This portion of the exam is strictly closed book so your dive theory had better be top-notch! You’ll also be examined on PADI Standards and Procedures. This portion of the exam contains 50 questions and you may use your PADI Instructor Manual and guide to Teaching. There is a time limit for each exam, so your ability to find relevant information quickly within the Instructor manual is crucial for your success. You must score a minimum of 75% on every exam.
- Knowledge Development Presentation: You’ll prepare and deliver one knowledge development presentation; prescriptively teaching the correct response to question from one of PADI’s core diver courses. You must score 3.5 (out of 5).
- Teaching in Confined Water: There are two parts to this. You’ll have to demonstrate (demonstration quality) 5 random skills from the PADI Open water Course, which will be assigned to you by the examiner. You must score 3 out of 5 for every skill, while scoring at least 4 on two skills. You’ll also have to teach one skill to a group of simulated students, whilst spotting and correcting mistakes which will be assigned by the examiner. You must score 3.4 (out of 5).
- Conducting Open water Training: You must prepare and teach 2 skills in Open Water with a passing score or 3.4 average. You’ll also have to demonstrate Rescue Exercise 7: Unresponsive diver on the surface, which is a pass or fail evaluation.
Your general dive skill, attitude and professionalism will be taken into account throughout the entire IE.
